This year over 2,900 people in Ireland will be told they have breast cancer, with eight women diagnosed with breast cancer in Ireland every day. This year, Alicia Keys and Stella McCartney, two major players in their respective artistic worlds, made a decision to join forces to raise awareness on breast cancer.

In this week's edition, we are sharing the stories of four Brunswick County survivors in a special section to show how breast cancer affects our neighbors, though we are confident we all know by now at least one person who has been diagnosed with it. "It's not a death sentence".

"A large body of research suggests that the black-white breast cancer disparity results from a complex interaction of biologic and nonbiologic factors, including differences in stage at diagnosis, tumor characteristics, obesity, other health issues, as well as tumor characteristics, particularly a higher rate of triple negative cancer", DeSantis said.

Dr. Maria Elena Martinez, co-lead of the Reducing Cancer Disparities Program at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, said that both nature and nurture are driving the trend.

Treatment typically is a mixture of surgery and radiation.

She added: “As we observe Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I urge everyone to protect their health by having a mammogram as recommended by your physician. The non-profit has been the association's main recipient for breast cancer donations. A new campaign, from AOR Dalton Agency, features Valynda Planeta, a 38-year-old mother of three who is now battling stage IV cancer. But dont take my wine away, she whines!

In fact, Texas Oncology has played a role in almost 70 FDA-approved cancer-fighting drugs, about one-third of all cancer therapies approved by the FDA to date. Though treatment can take some time, different types of hormone blocking have proved themselves valuable.

"It makes my job as a mammographer much more meaningful", she said, describing how she offers encouragement and sometimes a hug when she has to deliver sad news. Signs and symptoms to look out for are similar to that of a female and include; an inverted nipple, a lump anywhere within the breast tissue, nipple discharge, ulceration or swelling. While the majority of cancer happens by chance, about 5 percent to 10 percent of people with cancer have an inherited cancer.

Even though not everyone wore a pink survivor sash, almost everyone in the room stood when asked if someone close to them had cancer.

"Mammograms: How to Navigate the Confusing Recommendations and Get the Imaging You Need" will be presented by CMH board certified radiologist, Jana Horner, M.D.

"We hate cancer", Wright said.

While treatment and lifestyle changes are important, Branton said every patient is different and so are their needs.
